Members Y&RWorldTurner
Soaps are very big in India, I know their soaps tend to be even more outlandish than American soaps. I believe they're also big in Korea.
Members DRW50
I think they're called J Drama, or K Drama. TWOP has a thread which used to get posts. http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3150264&st=
Members Y&RWorldTurner
I know there's a big market for the Indian soaps in the UK, some have even been distributed there to big success. I think the BBC (can't recall which BBC channel) even aired one in the early 90's that was based on a Hindu epic.
Members frequentsoapfan
They are. I was visiting family in Guyana and they show some Indian soaps there too because of the large Indian population.
Members jfung79
Soaps in Asia, including India, are kind of like telenovelas in that they run for a certain period of time instead of forever. Some of them can go for years but they still end. Soaps are very, very popular in China, India, and Korea. I'm surprised there is not more discussion of especially Korean ones here, as there has been quite a craze about them. Soaps can be set both in the present day or in historical/legendary times. There are subtitled versions available. One of the longest running and popular Indian soaps of recent times was "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" (Because The Mother-In-Law Was Once a Daughter-In-Law Too). I never watched it but I read about it. A very popular historical Korean soap that may have been one of the first to launch the Korean soap craze in Asia as well as in the West is "Dae-Jang Geum," which I saw a few episodes of dubbed in Chinese.
