Denise Darcy (one of Barbara's models) killed him. He had incriminating pictures of her porn past or something. Denise was dating Hal at the time. The next year when Barbara was (falsely) convicted of killing James (in the Ruxton Hills fire) Denise was her cell mate and tried to kill her, I believe.

She was played by Marie Marshall.

I wish I had watched the Loving murders before the transition to The City. It seems a lot of people did like that story. Probably because all bets were off at the time as to who would be leaving or not. I know I find most stories boring because it ends up being a day player who is the killer or those being killed off if a serial murderer.

The "Sin Stalker" story on AW I remember being into when I was younger. Quinn was the only major player killed off but there were many attacks...even on Crystal Gayle. LOL

As an old school soap fan I agree that Henry Slesar got me hooked with Johna Lockwood/Keith Whitney murder.

I remember way back on Search for Tomorrow we were led to believe it was Jo's sister Eunice in a boat in the middle of the lake. Someone shot and killed her, only that it wasn't Eunice but someone else. We didn't find that out until days(maybe weeks) later when Eunice turned up alive. Does anybody remember that story?

Also on SFT there was Doug Martin paralyzed in a hospital bed and you see him looking into the face of an unknown person begging them to pull the plug, and they did.

Sosp watching was fun back in those days!

I remember reading about it in Mary Stuart's autobiography, Both of Me. IIRC, too, the reason why viewers were led to believe it was Eunice had to do with a hat found floating on the lake.

Here's my question: I don't remember where I got this information, but it seems like that whole sequence was written during a writers' strike. Is that correct?

You probably remember one of my old posts, Khan.

SFT went through a bad period beginning in 1973. Part of the blame was a four month WGA strike. It was during this period that the character of Eunice went to hell in a handbasket. Ken Harvey was a good actor, and I thought he and Ann Williams had chemistry together, but the scab writers threw Eunice at newcomer Val Dufour's John Wyatt. The writers were "off the chain" during the spring and summer of 1973. John had purchased a magazine and hired Eunice to write for it. This led to Doug's becoming jealous of Eunice's career and feeling inadequate as a provider. Then suddenly, Carl Devlin (who had published the magazine before John) became paranoid that executive Frank Ross intended to oust him. This happened literally overnight. Ross was in the hospital for minor surgery, and Devlin sneaked into the hospital and injected Ross with a fatal drug overdose. Ross had slipped out the back door of the magazine office while Eunice was working, thus giving himself an alibi. Doug and Eunice argued because Doug erroneously believed Eunice to be John's lover. Eunice became pissed and went to John's cabin in the woods to sort out her feelings. Devlin thought Eunice disappeared because she had somehow implicated him in Ross' murder. The storyline was illogical and played out in about two weeks. Devlin found out where Eunice was and went there. He saw what appeared to be Eunice in a boat in the lake. He shot her just as Doug arrived, after Jo convinced him of Eunice's loyalty. Devlin shot Doug too and fled. This was a location sequence. Eunice fell into the water. The police found her hat, which was distinctive, and rushed Doug to the hospital. After a week or two of episodes, we learned that Eunice was alive. She explained that John's secretary Marion Malin (who was in love with John) had met her at the cabin to warn her away. It was Marian, wearing the same hat as Eunice, who was killed. Doug awoke and discovered that he was paralyzed from the waist down. He pretended that he had intended all along to divorce Eunice because now he didn't want her burdened with a disabled husband. Later, Doug was in a terrible car wreck, hit by Jo's son-in-law Len Whiting, who was drunk driving. This accident left Doug paralyzed from the neck down! The show was truly outrageous, with depressing, dark stories.

Jennifer shooting Eunice (in her bathrobe in her living room!) a few years later was the darkest point for me on SEARCH...

Until years later, when a serial killer (every soap had one, and DAYS had twenty-one!) took out Recast Stephanie and Sarah, Jo's insta-granddaughter. Wendy was possibly killed also (she disappeared). SFT then killed off Suzi, Eunice's daughter, in a car wreck! Depressing.

Ann Williams' (Eunice) kids claim that Mary Stuart was jealous of Ann's fan mail and insisted that Eunice be written off. Hmmmm? Eunice was a heroine with ALOT of screen time...

After the second car accident, Doug wanted to die. He begged his loved ones to end his life. Eventually, Jennifer Pace, who was in love with Doug's son, Scott, was the one who ended his life. Jennifer ended up in prison for the act. I don't remember the timeline in terms of Jennifer's glass door miscarriage, but I think it happened before. saynotoursoaps should be able to expand on this.
