What else was Winfred Wolfe involved in besides Somerset?

The Doctors stuff sounds interesting, although some of it seems a bit pseudo-mystertical. It's interesting they had an Asian character on the show at this time. Most soaps didn't.

I didn't realize Labine and Mayer were still at LOL by this time. Was the show still doing well?

Did they imply that Erica's breakdown over the miscarriage was because of her aborting Jeff's baby several years prior?

Wow, an SFT/ATWT crossover! Too bad it wasn't with an actual ATWT character.

Was Mary Frann still playing Amanda on DAYS? Or was she the only Amanda?

So EON...this was the debut of Serena Faraday, that Louise Shaffer character who bridged the gap between CBS and ABC.

Mary Frann was the only Amanda from 1974 to 1979.

I was shocked to see SFT Wendy going to Oakdale. I love the fact that they used this city: P&G had its own universe.

Winifred Wolfe co-head wrote ATWT when Irna Phillips first left in 1970. She was replaced by Katherine Phillips when "A World Apart" was a failure. Wolfe moved to SOMERSET as a staff writer and was promoted to head writer after Robert J. Shaw left. She died in October 1981 from stomach cancer at 53.

LOL was nearly the bottom with 7.0 for 1974-1975 season (only Somerset et How To Survive a Marriage were behind). Labine and Mayer made it better before leaving for creating RH: 9 out of 14 soaps in 1975-1976. As soon as Margaret DePriest and the Schneiders took over, LOL fell again: from 7.2 to 6.3 in a year.

Thanks.

53 :( At least she got to write Somerset to its end. So she was the one who came up with the stuff with Ellen and Jill, bringing them back? That's interesting. I always thought it was very ahead of its time to have Ellen involved with Jameson Parker. I didn't realize her daughter was involved with an older man. That's very good soapy drama. Ellen and Jameson's character were together to the end weren't they?

I didn't know that on GL, TJ had been around at this time. I thought he started a few years later. It's a shame they let the character basically drift away after Kevin Bacon left -- they could have used him in the teen scene of 83.

I'm not sure she wrote Somereset until the end. Robert LaGuardia listed other HWs after her: Don Appell, Russell Kubec and A.J. Russell. I will try to find more.

T.J. had just begun played by T.J. Hargrave from late 1974 to 1976. He was absent from the scene until Kevin Bacon took over in 1980.

Amanda Howard was a widow disturbed by persistent nightmares involving her dead husband and her physician, Dr. Neil Curtis, a compulsive gambler. Amanda's psychiatric problems were rooted in her having an affair with Neil while her husband was on his deathbe. The ensuing guilt reaction was being treated by Laura Horton; but Neil only made Amanda's condition wrse by insisting that she not tell Laura about her affair with him. Neil was a society doctor, worried about scandal. Self-involved, Neil had no intention of marrying Amanda - until mounting gambling debts forced him to propose to her for her money. On the night efore their wedding, Amanda found Neil in the arms of a prostitute, and then tried to kill herself. Of course, the wedding never took place. Dr. Greg Peters, Neil's associate, found himself responding to this beautiful woman's urgent need for live - because his wife Susan was turning into a nagging wife. Soon, Greg and Neil were at odds over Amanda's welfare (and affections), and Susan was beginning to suspect that her husband was not just taking Amanda's blood pressure every night.

Neil and Greg called a shaky truce in their war of male egos ove Amanda when her terrible secret was revealed: she had a brain tumour and ony six months to live! he refused to have a spectacularly dangerous operation that could have left her without memory or speech; but she was als condemning herself to certain death. Neil wed aging Phyllis Anderson only for her large settlement from ex-husband Bob, in order to pay of his gambling debts. But Neil had reformed, and had he known of Amanda's plight, he would have maried her instead of Phyllis- bcause he truly loved Amanda. Greg loved Amanda, too, and after divorcing Susan who left Salem, he begged Amanda to marry him, but she wouldn't; she still loved Neil. Both doctors finally persaded Amanda to have the operation, and when it was over her life was saved but she was almost a vegetable: no memory, no speech. There was some improvement, and one day she wrote on a piece of paper: "Which man do I love?" Nel proved his mettle when he allowed Amanda to be lied to, for her own good, because Neil was married: "Greg Peters". Greg and Neil eagerly awaited her further recovery. As Amanda slowly regained her memory, it was Neil, not Greg, she was drawn to, and Neil eventully responded, even though Phyllis was having his baby, Nathan, who died after birth.

Amanda had married Greg and Neil tried to strengthen his bonds with Phyllis. Amanda and Greg had a strong marriage fo a while. But after Greg was appointed Chief Of Staff at University Hospital, he developped an obsession with power and prestige which alienated Amanda. When he later took another position in Chicago, Amanda, feeling neglected, returned to Salem alone and started a passionate love affair with Chris Kositchek, who found Amanda wonderful after his many stormy months with strong-minded Mary Anderson, Bob and Phyllis' daughter. They planned on marrying, but then Greg came to Salem and talked Amanda into going back with him in Chicago.

I don't think any of her time as Amanda is available, but Mary Frann did have a big hit as Joanne Louden on Newhart.

I remember reading a summary that talked about how Amanda's mother had died from the same thing Amanda had and how she found letters from her mother talking about dying, and this was one of the reasons she made peace with not having the operation. I wish I could see that, it sounds like classic Bill Bell (I think that was still Bill Bell).

I think she was also involved with Chris Koshiteck on the show, because Josh Taylor listed Mary Frann as one of the great ladies he worked with as Chris.
