SoapNet Picks Up Two Reality Series, Second Season of 'Erica' TVWeek
SoapNet is adding two new reality series to its slate.
The network has picked up “Bank of Mom and Dad” from BBC Worldwide Productions and “Holidate” from ABC Media Productions.
“Bank of Mom and Dad,” which is adapted from a BBC format, follows women in their 20s and 30s as their Mom and Dad move in for one week to police their finances.
The 10-episode “Holidate” explores finding love in different cities. Originally a one-hour special, it is slated to premiere July 29.
Additionally, the network has picked up original scripted drama “Being Erica” from BBC Worldwide Sales & Distribution for a second season. The 12-episode second season will premiere in early 2010.

Soapnet just sucks these days. I know all about how beloved their new shows are in the demo, or whatever, but I can't sit through them.
I'm willing to bet aside from Y&R and maybe DAYS(which they have already paid for), they will replace the ABC lineup with movies, original reality shows, and reruns of those reality shows. I bet they will even change the name to usher in this new branding(i.e. CourtTV to tru, SciFi to SyFy, TNN to SPIKE). The new name will protect it from regressing in case the times get tough, ala GSN.
And if there ARE same-days to watch, they will either be available on the SOAPnet website and/or available in one showing in the graveyard hours.
Frons will spin it as a ratings and/or budgetary issue. If the residuals for television reruns have gone up with AFTRA, WGA, and DGA, I could see that as a reason to scale back on airings of all the show.
It would be ballsy if Frons ended up keeping Y&R and his pet, GH, seeing as those are the only two shows in widescreen HD. Frons may want to launch SOAPnet HD and in order to do that, he would have to kick OLTL and AMC to the curb.

I'd buy more then getting rid of the evening showings of soaps if they haven't had month and month of record growth for viewers for AMC and OLTL especially. They finally figured out how to get people to watch soaps later that night and double the revune for a show they own, why get rid of that?

I'm surprised RH has even lasted this long, unless there are other people like me who just have to see Sarah Felder or Ilene Kristen or Kate Mulgrew or Nell repeating stories 4 or 5 times. I don't think anything else will ever run any classic soaps. The "failure" of the classic soaps on Soapnet probably guarantees it.
It's so much cheaper and easier to just pump your channel full of refuse Canada does not want. Fine. Frons is a genius. Just change the name of the channel already. And perhaps, someday, put on some reruns of Avonlea, or You Can't Do That on Television, or that show which I don't remember the title of that ran in the 90s and was about a news station. Or that other show about forest rangers that used to run on Trio. Is Trio still around?
Or Celine Dion videos.
Celine Dion videos > Southern Belles.

Honestly, id love to see classic soaps. However, that failure of them on soapnet should seal the fate. Hopefully whoever own's the rites will seel them to online markets.
And you cant just change a name of a network. Its not simple. They also risk losing the clearance they have in markets and with companies.

SOAPnet never gave "classic" daytime soaps a fair shake to begin with. They restarted Ryan's Hope more times than anyone cares to mention. Not to mention, a show like Sunset Beach could have been easily and cheaply acquired and they didn't even bother going for it. And Sunset Beach would easily appeal to their target demo.

Why not?! As I mentioned previously, many networks have changed their name before with little to no resistance. I think a name change would help SOAPnet revamp its image and keep it moving ahead as a reality/teen drama rehash, in the event the newer programs tank.
I disagree. Soapnet did give it a good chance. Esp with Another World and Ryans Hope. AW failed, miserably so.
And im sorry, i was wrong. I was going off the drama of the family chan to fox family to abc family.
That said, as much as we hate to admit it for whatever reason most of what soapnet shows ARE soaps. The OC is a soap. 90210 is a soap. OC is a soap. Not a daytime soap, a primetime soap, but still a soap. And the network is SOAPnet, not DAYTIMESOAPnet. Those shows along with reruns of current soaps make up at least 75% of the lineup.

I have no problem with SoapNet showing reruns of prime time soaps. I just started watching the O.C. which I never paid attention to before. I also like the reruns of the Gilmore Girls.
SoapNet is supposedly barely making a profit. If they decide to stop the same day re-airings and change its name, it sounds like good business strategy. I never thought that the same day re-airings were profitable other than maybe Y&R.
