The 2008 Daytime Airhog Awards

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) -- What would a year end chart be without a look back at who hogged the most airtime in all of 2008?

As the year 2008 came to a close, so did a years worth of tracking appearances of contract and recurring actors on daytime's remaining eight soap operas. "General Hospital's" Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) and "The Bold and the Beautiful's" Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke Logan Forrester) top the list of appearances in 2008 as the duo appeared in 224 and 222 out of the 253 episodes of soap opera produced last year.

Actually, since KKL appears on a 1/2 hour show, she didn't clog up the airwaves as much. So these are essentially episodes, not hours.

Was Ronn Moss left out? He has to be in the Top 30.
Interesting list though.

I love this and I agree with many on the list.

I was surprised not to see Roger Howarth (Paul Ryan,ATWT) on the list.
Maybe it just seems like he stays front burner all the time,LOL!

THANKS!

Question, why was John Brotherton taken off the list, when he had 162 episodes. Also, from the OLTL episode count, John Paul didn't have 159 episodes.

As far as I'm concerned Michael Easton ownes this thread. He has no ties to OLTL, and he's crammed into every frigging story.

According to an update given to us, the episode counts for Brotherton and Lavoisier were originally mis-counted, Brotherton was therefore taken out of the Top 30...Lavosier was pushed up. If there is proof of another miscalculation, please point me to the corrected version(s).

Thanks.

After reviewing the charts once more, the chart will be revised (Brotherton had additional episodes due to his role as Clint Buchanan in the back to the past episodes of OLTL).

That was my bad jc, I used your November year to date which had SBu at 211. I'll edit your posts in the archive, looking at it Sept. 08 is when the +4 started.

And where's FF (Gigi), KDP (Blair), KA (Starr) BB (Cole) I also see them as airhogs too.

For that matter they airhog half of 2008. Trevor St John had less in the beginning of 2008 and didn't airhog half as much as the one's mention above.

And the only time KDP was off sceen was the summer and even than she wasn't off screen that much.

Why only count TSJ as the airhog. I wish he meant that much to the TPTB as much as this poll. Than their be a reason for this meaning something where he is concern.

You can check out my Top 50 list in the Discuss the Soap Forum where I break it down by percentage and by episode count. I acutally keep track of all shows throughtout the year by either watching, reading recaps or using the cast lists at tv.com and entering them into an excel database then double checking my numbers when others post them here on SON, then I go and triple check any differences. I have been doing this for the past since 2006 and even do a half way count as well in July.

I do find mistakes in my GH count when I am submitting stuff to imdb, I just didn't have time to change any corrections after they are moved to the archive.

Check out the lists that JCar did.

Either way it is looked out by percentage or episode count, Trevor St. John is still highest among the cast for all year. And due to that he is the one that logged the most airtime and thus he fell into this list.

This list is about numbers and not picking favorites or picking on anyone. It is based on facts, and you can point at others but the facts can't be disregarded no matter how you look at it. Trevor St. John was in more episodes for OLTL and he was the biggest percentage of episodes for OLTL and fell into the Top 30 Airhogs for soaps this year.

No one is saying that there weren't other airhogs out there because there were. But even with that it still does not take away from the fact that Trevor St. John was OLTL's #1 airhog.

That's an old staple for Daytime Soaps Though. Many of the shows through the years have had characters who had no or very little ties to the canvas of characters - yet they were featured a lot.

For instance Lenore Moore Curtin on AW had no ties to the main families. Her only family in town was her mother. Yet the latter 60's and early 70's she was featured a great deal on AW and figured into many stories.

Also on Days of Our Lives, you have 2 examples with Marlena Evans and early on with Susan Martin. Both ladies had hardly any ties in town but they figured into many stories.

On OLTL in the early years you had Carla Gray who's only relative in town was her mother yet she was featured a great deal in the early years. Then in the mid 70's came Pat Ashley and she was dealt with in the same way.

On Y&R Kay Chancellor never had any family other than a son in town for over 20 years - yet she was featured in many many stories.

I could go on with some other examples.

I used to have a problem with John, but finally under Ron's writing I have been able to tolerate him. Under Higley everything seemed to be about John. With Ron, John is seen but it is not all about him every time.

Seems OLTL is very balanced relative to some of the others. I don't think any of the performers have dominated screentime except perhaps Todd and of late Marty. But that's cyclical and they do a good job of allowing characters to have some downtime so we aren't just inundated by them. They are definitely at risk of overexposing Marty (as they did Rex and Gigi over the summer), but hopefully they'll pull back soon.
